Change Love Purpose

From the Brother of a Warrior

For me, Jason’s story of being a warrior begins well before June of 2014.  I am a firm believer that Christ shapes us every day and uses our seemingly small decisions of obedience to shape us and those with which we come in contact.  In a large poetic sense that only God can describe, these small disconnected choices are revealed in a perfect timeline that only He can string together, and He has used Jason to show me just that.

I have known Jason for three decades, and it has been an honor and a privilege to call him my brother and best friend.  I have always considered Jason a role model and definitely a warrior.  I have watched him persevere through many trials, such as running a half marathon on a stress fractured foot, finishing a stellar collegiate baseball career with a blown elbow, and loving a life with multiple sclerosis.

Yes, “loving” is not a typo.  Jason shows that loving life and living life are two drastically different viewpoints.  I will never forget the day he told me that multiple sclerosis was one of the best things that ever happened to him.  Of course, I needed an explanation to understand what I had just heard, but what ensued next has defined my daily thoughts since.

Jason began to explain the platform for which God was laying the ground work and how He was using the illness to open the door to conversations and relationships Jason may never have realized without this sickness.  I also began to see God mold and shape Jason into being more intentional with others.  It is common for Jason to meet “random” people and have 45 minute conversations about life, God, etc.  I have seen complete strangers open up to Jason about daily struggles after only a few seconds of knowing him.  While I know Jason has always been blessed with the incredible ability to connect with others, I have watched God grow this blessing to extraordinary levels.

Jason’s faithfulness to God’s mission, and his eagerness to make the most of the opportunities placed before him are the most important lessons he has taught me.  Day by day, I watch Jason’s faithfulness to God’s call grow regardless of the situation, and his insatiable appetite to become more selfless is infectious.  I am excited to see the next chapter of the story God is creating through him, because I know God has even larger plans in store for Jason.
